Descartes are developing their math skills by using Numicon and Numberblocks characters to represent numbers 11 to 20. This hands-on approach helps build both understanding and resilience, as they tackle each new challenge with confidence and creativity. It’s a fun way to make learning engaging while reinforcing important number concepts!

Descartes make the most of a rare snow day, catching delicate snowflakes on black paper to examine their unique shapes. A perfect hands-on way to explore our 'Weather' topic and witness nature's artistry in action!

We visited Birmingham city centre to explore the key geographical features of our city. Our tour included stops at several iconic landmarks, such as the Birmingham Library, the Town Hall, the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, and the Hall of Memory. Each site provided a wonderful opportunity for learning, offering a rich cultural experience.

Descartes spent time exploring subtraction with the part-part whole model this week, helping their minds see numbers in new ways! They built a strong foundation in understanding subtraction within 10-setting them up for confident, joyful math learning!

This week Descartes had a lot of fun recording their algorithms they had completed in the previous week on ‘how to make a sandwich’. They enjoyed learning how to use a camera to record a video of each other successfully and then evaluate their performances!

The children enjoyed our local Geography walk yesterday. The children had to follow their map using directional language and spot what types of features we could find. The children found the church, the community hall, the vets and we also discussed the different types of homes. These included flags, semi detached houses and terraced houses.

Descartes have been busy creating a storyboard during their English lessons using 'The Three Goats Gruff' story line. They impressed themselves with brilliant recall, retelling and artistic skills!

This term in science, the children are learning about animals including humans. During our retrieval practise, the children are using their 5 senses. They enjoyed smelling the candy floss perfume and tasting the lemons and limes. We had a great discussion about our tongue and how it works. The children enjoyed watching everyone’s reactions whilst eating sour food!

The children have been working hard in maths. We have used a part-part whole model to support our composition of numbers. Well done!

I’m excited to share how well the children in Descartes Class have settled in this term. They’ve shown incredible resilience as they adjust from their Reception class, and I’m super proud of how they are embracing our school values of respect, responsibility, and resilience.
The children have been working hard in all areas of learning. In Maths, we’ve been focusing on counting forwards and backwards, while in English, they’ve impressed me with their ability to use adjectives to create descriptive sentences.
Thank you for your continued support! I’ve attached the Little Wandle Phonics video to help reinforce your child’s phonics learning at home. We will soon be moving onto phase five!
