Story Wood School "Inspiring Minds to Universally Succeed" "inspirati omnia impetramus"

P.E

The National Curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives

At Story Wood we deliver on the above aims through a wide range of activities and embrace many sporting opportunities.

We are a member of the Kingsbury Sports Partnership. This provides an arena for competitive games for all abilities throughout the year.

We also run a wide range of after school sports clubs throughout the year which can be accessed by KS1 & KS2. These include, Multi skills, Football, Hockey, Fencing and Gymnastics.

There is also a Dance club for EYFS- Year 1. Pupils take part in ballet and tap lessons.

As a Birmingham school we have signed up to the Sport Birmingham Strategy 2019 (PDF attachment).

Through our PE curriculum we aim to ensure the pupils have the opportunity to meet the national curriculum requirements as follows:

In KS1 our pupils are taught to:

  • master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • perform dances using simple movement patterns

In KS2 our pupils are taught to:

  • use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
  • perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best

As part of our commitment to allow our pupils to take part in outdoor and adventurous activity we offer pupils two opportunities to sleep away from home. In Year 2 pupils take part in a Pirate experience when they sleep out in tents in our very own Story Wood. In Y5 we invite the pupils on residential for a week away from home, taking part in a range of adventurous activities at Kingswood Residential centre.

In Y3 our pupils swim weekly during the Autumn, Spring and Summer term and are taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
