End of Year Expectations for Year 1

This leaflet outlines information for parents and carers on the end of year expectations for pupils at our school.

The National Curriculum details these expectations as being the minimum requirements your child should meet in order to ensure continued progress.

All these objectives will be taught throughout the year. Any extra support you can provide is greatly valued

 

Maths

Count to 100 forwards and backwards, beginning at any number

Write numbers to 100 as numerals

Identify one more and one less of a given number

Use the + (addition), - (subtraction) and = (equals) symbols

Add and subtract one and two-digit numbers to 20

Solve missing number problems for addition and subtraction (e.g. 7 = ? – 9)

Understand that fractions represent equal parts

Find 12 and 14 of a shape, object or quantity

 

Reading

Fluency

Identify the sound that individual letters or groups of letters make.

Read accurately by blending sounds in words

Begin to read common words on sight (e.g. we, to, like, the)

Read words ending in –s, -es, -ing, -ed, -er and –est.

Read words with contractions (e.g. I’m, I’ll, we’ll)

Comprehension

Check the text makes sense to them as they read

Discuss what has been read with an adult and link to their own experiences

Answer simple questions about the text

Make some simple inferences from the text

Predict what might happen next in a text.

 

Writing

Form lower case letters in the correct direction

Form capital letters in the correct direction

Leave finger spaces between words

Use a capital letter for the personal pronoun I

Use capital letters for the name of people, places and the days of the week

Use capital letters and full stops to punctuate a sentence

Punctuate sentences using an exclamation mark

Punctuate sentences using a question mark

Join words and clauses using the conjunction ‘and’

Use past and present tense correctly

Write a series of sentences about a theme or topic
